Big Bohemian Eclectic ~ Living Room Makeover ~ Thrifty Art Makeover

So I've been on the hunt for the perfect piece to go over my sofa for like 7 years, I'm not kidding. I had an amazing sunburst mirror over the sofa at one point. Now it's over my entertainment center. Once I realized that it was a danger to my children I quickly moved it.

It was really hard for me to find a piece that I loved and that would be safe around my kiddos. It had to be light and with no sharp edges. I looked in every thrift store as well as major stores. Never finding anything that really spoke to me.

And then one sunny day

a few months ago

on a thrifting excursion

I found it!

Something drew me in to this piece, and I just had to have it. I looked at the price and it was $30. Great deal right, well the problem was I only had $20 to spend. I think I stared at it for about 10 minutes with a really sad face because I couldn't believe that I had finally found the piece and I couldn't afford it. I had already spent most of my funds for the month and I am always on a very strict budget.

Then a store clerk came by and asked if I was taking the piece. I sadly said no and I said I would try to come back for it. The clerk offered me a discount which now put this awesome piece of art  down to $20 and I swear I think I squealed with excitement.

It is a huge piece about 4ft x 3ft. Now the frame I thought was hideous but I knew I could fix that. And well here it is, in all it's glory. I painted the frame with Woodlawn Charm Paint from Valspar/lowes. Isn't it amazing or is it just me? It makes me happy every time I see it. I just want to jump inside the picture. What is your favorite piece of art? Have you spruced any up lately? Send me pics if you have!

  1. I use to work at Michaels as a framer, so I can tell you, that frame alone was worth more than $30.00. But you're right, it looks much better painted. Now to look deep in the painting and go for a long walk, (when the kids are fussing and making a mess, lol)
